Penobscot Nation upset with slot machine veto

The Penobscot Nation wants to sever its relationship with the state of Maine after Gov. John Baldacci vetoed a slot machine bill.

Chief Kirk Francis said the tribe is wasting its time talking with the state. He said Baldacci is not committed to helping the tribe with economic development as promised a few years ago.

"This isn’t just about slot machines. I know this will come across strong, but I think it’s important that people understand that we’ve tried," Francis told The Bangor Daily News. "I’m not saying we haven’t created some of our own problems over the years, but in the long run when you have to set an agenda to get permission to ask for your tribe’s own success … you can understand why the tribes get frustrated."

The tribe's land claims settlement act gives the state some authority over activities on the reservation.
