California lawmakers consider slot machine bill

printer friendly
Lawmakers in California are debating a bill that would allow tribes who signed compacts in 1999 to offer up to 2,000 slot machines.

A total of 61 tribes signed the compact that promised each up to 2,000 machines. But due to a complex formula in the agreement, the state Gambling Control Commission has imposed a cap of 61,957 slot machines.

The cap means some tribes won't be able to offer 2,000 machines. Senate Bill 1201, sponsored by Sen. Jim Battin, a Republican, ensures they can reach the maximum.

Some tribes have since negotiated new agreements to break the 2,000 barrier. They won't be affected by the bill.
