Editorial: Mohegan Tribe right to halt expansion

"Almost two years ago, Mohegan Sun announced it was undertaking a nearly billion-dollar expansion of its resort casino, including a 39-story hotel tower. It seemed to indicate that the Mohegan Tribe would continue to change the landscape of southeastern Connecticut, both literally and economically.

The landscape has indeed changed since November 2007, but it is the nation's financial picture that is dramatically different today from the way it was when plans for Project Horizon, the $925 million casino expansion that was halted on Tuesday, was first proposed.

The Mohegan Tribe made a prudent decision. Tribal Chairman Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum said that, faced with declining casino revenues and the country's ongoing economic recession, tribal and casino leaders agreed to suspend the project and reassess its feasibility in another year.

”Things are tight, and there is just too much uncertainty. And winter is approaching and we don't expect things to get any better anytime soon,” said Chairman Bozsum."
