First Nation urged to cut out smoking at bingo

The Gitsegukla Band of British Columbia is considering a request to ban smoking at its bingo games.

The band hosts games at its community hall that is connected to the elementary school.. Parents say their children have complained about the smell of smoke in the classroom.

"They go to school every day and have to inhale every day what's embedded in their books and the rugs," Crystal Smith, the president of Gitsegukla Elementary's parents advisory council, told CBC News.

Smoking is banned in public places in B.C. but the law exempts traditional Native activities.
