Pequot Tribe eyes new market as economy tanks

The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut is banking on a casino in Pennsylvania as its economy back home has been hit by the national recession.

Slot machine revenues are down and per capita payments to tribal members have been slashed. Some wonder whether the tribe should pursue the out-of-state project.

"The biggest question was how can the tribe afford it," an anonymous tribal member told The Philadelphia Inquirer "We didn't get that answered."

The tribe wants to build a slot machine facility in downtown Philadelphia. The Mohegan Tribe operates a slot facility in the northeast part of the state.
