Editorial: Excitement at Chickasaw Nation track

"Much excitement attended the recent re-branding of a Tulsa tribal casino as a "Hard Rock Hotel.” More than a casino, the Cherokee Nation facility boasts a hotel, five restaurants, five nightclubs, convention space and a golf course. What it doesn’t have is a thoroughbred horse racing track or a location near other tourism draws.

Those are two things Remington Park in Oklahoma City does have. With its sale to the Chickasaw Nation, Remington is poised to generate new enthusiasm for the track, its casino and a surrounding tourism area dubbed the "Adventure District.”

Remington is in good hands with the Chickasaws, whose business acumen is unparalleled among tribal governments. The tribe spent more than $80 million to buy the facility at NE 50 and Martin Luther King. It expects to spend about $12 million for initial improvements. That’s far less than the Cherokees spent in Tulsa, but this is only the beginning for an expansion that could include a hotel."
