Former South Dakota governor calls for casino competition

Former South Dakota governor Bill Janklow doesn't think the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe should be the only one in the game for a casino.

The tribe is proposing an off-reservation casino near Sioux Falls to counteract one that was just approved across the border in Iowa. The idea is still in the discussion stages but Janklow says the state would be better off by opening up bids for a casino.

"So if they are going to do that, and I'm not suggesting they should, but if South Dakota is going to do that, they ought to open it up to everybody in South Dakota. Let people bid for the right to put a casino in competition with Larchwood," Janklow told KELO-TV.

Janklow's trial for manslaughter took place in Flandreau, near the tribe's headquarters.
