BIA approves casino for Cowlitz Tribe

The Bureau of Indian Affairs gave final approval to a casino for the Cowlitz Tribe of Washington.

The BIA issued a final environmental impact statement for the casino over two years ago but the Bush administration never took action on it. That changed with a decision today by Assistant Secretary Larry Echo Hawk.

“This project will allow the Cowlitz Tribe to create hundreds of jobs and invest in other forms of economic development. It will also allow the Tribe to begin the restoration of its homelands,” Echo Hawk said in a press release.

The tribe plans to build the Cowlitz Casino Resort on 152 acres in Clark County.
