City wants to discuss gaming with two Wampanoag tribes

The city council in New Bedford, Massachusetts, has invited the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe and the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe to a meeting tonight to discuss gaming.

The tribes haven't said whether they will attend, The New Bedford Standard-Times reported. But both are interested in gaming now that lawmakers have passed a bill to authorize a casino in their region of the state.

The city council is also meeting with two non-Indian developers. The bill gives the state about a year to negotiate a Class III gaming compact -- after that, bids can be opened to other entities.
