Travel: A strange visit to two tribal casinos in the Northeast

"Strangely, my research adventure last weekend took us to two separate Indian casinos five hours' drive apart from each other, on the same day.

And so it was that I found myself sitting on Saturday in a food court in the Turning Stone Indian Casino in rural New York, a jarringly urban high-rise resort hotel and casino that towered above a green, undeveloped and relatively unpopulated country landscape.

To my left an obese man in a "Hooters Las Vegas" T-shirt was aggressively massacring a pile of chicken wings. Behind me, a twentysomething girl was drinking a beer that she'd bought from the food court's ice cream stand.

It did not appear to be her first beer for the day.

It was 1pm."
