UKB hopes to convince South Carolina governor on casino bid

The United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma hopes to convince South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley (R) to agree to an off-reservation casino.

Haley has expressed doubts about signing a Class III gaming compact with the tribe and supporting a land-into-trust application. But the tribe, and its developers, hope to present her with a plan by the end of the year.

"I've never known of an economic development in South Carolina where more than 4,000 jobs are going to be created, with $180 million in compensation, and the investors do not ask for a dime from anybody," Bob McAlister, who is part of the development team, told The Island Packet.

The casino would be located near Hilton Head Lakes.
