Opinion: Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe's casino wrong for city

"On Feb. 15, the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe signed an option for the land in East Taunton in the Liberty and Union Industrial Park. At a press conference on Feb. 29, the mayor announced that the Mashpee were considering Taunton for their casino.

Mr. Cromwell and the mayor both stated in effect that transparency and keeping the public aware and involved would be paramount. When Mr. Cromwell and the mayor were asked by the media at their press conference (a City Council member informed me that the council was notified of the press conference no more than 12 hours prior to the press conference, and this writer heard of it on the radio while driving to City Hall to get a burning permit of all things) where the land was located, Mr. Cromwell and the mayor both stated that several locations were being considered and specified none."
