Fort Sill Apache Tribe moving forward on casino in New Mexico

Note: Posting has been updated, based on new information in a tribal press release and an examination of the BIA letter that was referenced in the Associated Press story.

The Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma is moving forward with plans for an off-reservation casino in New Mexico.

The tribe has a 30-acre reservation in the southern part of the state. But so far, federal agencies have said the land can't be used for gaming since it was acquired after 1988.

So the tribe is proceeding with a two-part determination under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The Bureau of Indian Affairs recently sent a letter to Gov. Susana Martinez (R) , who has opposed the project, to start the consultation process.

The tribe's ancestors lived in southern New Mexico before being taken as prisoners of war and eventually removed to Oklahoma.
