Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe quiet on compact discussion for now

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe isn't discussing specifics of its Class III gaming compact negotiations with Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) for now.

An agreement could be announced as early as next week. It's expected to include revenue sharing provisions.

Normally, tribes agree to share revenues in exchange for some form of exclusivity. That could be an issue for the Mashpees since two racetracks within 25 miles of its gaming site are seeking to add slot machines to their facilities.

A gaming expert said the Mashpees should ensure, through the compact, that neither track gets the license. But so far the two facilities are the only ones that expressed interest in applying for one.

Stephen Crosby, the chairman of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, said the state isn't required to issue the license.
