Letter: Michigan tribes offer few protections for gaming workers

"Twenty-two of the 25 existing casinos in Michigan are tribal, and seven more are being proposed. As of right now, when an employee falls victim to discriminatory action within a tribal casino, he or she cannot seek justice in a state or federal court. Employees are not made aware of this fact upon hiring or during employment. Casino workers cannot seek justice through the Michigan Department of Civil Rights or the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The only option is to file suit in tribal court, however, trying to find an attorney that will or can practice tribal law is nearly impossible. Representation is extremely scarce leaving American citizens defenseless."
