The state of New York received $22 million from 22 companies that want to open commercial casinos. Three tribes are in the game: the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation and the Mohegan Tribe, both from Connecticut, and the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians of Wisconsin. Each submitted a $1 million non-refundable application fee. The tribes want to open casinos in the Catskills, a region about 90 miles north of New York City. The region will receive two licenses and drew the most number of applicants. Last November, voters approved a referendum [PDF: Proposal 1] to authorize up to seven casinos in the state.
