Small Minnesota tribe improving way of life

The Upper Sioux Indian Community of Minnesota is one of the smallest and poorest tribes in the state. But tribal leaders are paving the way for a better future through gaming revenues and other funds.
Almost all of the tribe's 414 members live on or near the reservation. Half of them are under 18.
Ten years ago, the median household income was $7,600. Thanks to gaming, it's now $25,625, a significant improvement, although the tribe ranks 10th in terms of income among Minnesota's 11 tribes.
The money has helped the tribe buy land, create infrastructure and help tribal youth with education. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Tribe, owners of a successful casino near the Twin Cities, has stepped in with loans and other grants.
