Nez Perce Tribe calls for protection of salmon
Friday, August 13, 2004

The Nez Perce Tribe of Idaho and two conservation groups released a study on Thursday to back greater protections for salmon on the Snake River.

The economic analysis concludes that it would cost Idaho Power Co. about $12 million to make improvements on Hells Canyon dams that would ensure fish passage and fish restoration. The study says the company can bear the cost of the project with existing profits or just by charging electricity customers an additional $1 a month.

Power utilities typically argue against such improvements, saying they will raise the price of electricity.
