Morongo Band negotiates law enforcement compact

The Morongo Band of Missions Indians is negotiating a police services agreement with Riverside County, California.
The compact is considered a first in the Public Law 280 state. It would authorize the county to provide two deputies to patrol the reservation 10 hours a day, according to The Riverside Press-Enterprise.
The county sheriff's department has already started patrols on the reservation. The tribe is hoping to stem illegal dumping and drug problems.
