University considers return of 'Warriors' nickname

Marquette University in Illinois is considering whether to bring back its old "Warriors" nickname.

The school changed to the Golden Eagles in 1994 after 40 years of using the Warriors name and Indian logo. The school's "Willie Wampum" mascot was eliminated in 1971 and later replaced by a "First Warriors" mascot.

But some are clamoring for the return to the old name because a benefactor who sits on the board of trustee offer to donate $2 million to the school if the Warriors was brought back. The Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council opposes the change.

The board of trustees has collected information about the proposal. A decision was to be made at a Wednesday meeting but it was put off pending further study.
