Penobscot Nation to open statewide pharmacy

The Penobscot Nation of Maine plans to open a statewide mail-order pharmacy on May 1, a tribal consultant said.

The tribe has been working with the state to establish the program. The tribe will fill prescriptions from a storage and distribution facility on the reservation.

The drugs will be purchased from American distributors. But the tribe has been designated by the state as a drug importer in hopes of bringing in cheaper prescription drugs from Canada.

That part of the plan is waiting input from the federal government as tribes in Minnesota are considering doing the same.
