Hopi Tribe prepares for upcoming elections

The Hopi Tribe of Arizona will be holding a primary election and general election in November.
Chairman Wayne Taylor Jr. has announced his bid for re-election. He will face a challenge from Caleb Johnson, the current vice chairman who was elected after his predecessor was ousted.
Running for vice chairman are Phillip Quochytewa and Robert Sumatzkuku. More candidates are possible since the deadline to file isn't until October 18.
Among the issues the tribe is facing is the planned shutdown of a generating station that uses coal from mines on the Hopi and Navajo reservations. The shutdown would lead to the loss of jobs and revenues.
Other issues include the tribe's appeal of the U.S. Forest Service's decision to allow snowmaking in the sacred San Francisco Peaks, a proposed end to the Navajo-Hopi land commission and efforts to get the tribe into gaming.
