County may lease land to Little Shell Chippewa Tribe

Commissioners in Cascade County, Montana, will vote tomorrow on a proposal to lease land to the Little Shell Chippewa Tribe.
The tribe plans to use the land for a headquarters, a visitor center, a fountain and trails. The tribe hopes to obtain funding from the state to finance the project.
The county commission previously voted to support the tribe's federal recognition. The tribe gained preliminary recognition through the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 2000 but it waiting on a final answer. The tribe is gathering local support in order to obtain recognition through an act of Congress.
