Arapaho man convicted of daughter's murder
Monday, April 3, 2006

A member of the Northern Arapaho Tribe of Wyoming was found guilty of first-degree murder for the death of his 22-month-old daughter

Andrew Yellowbear Jr. was convicted after three days of deliberations. He now faces the death penalty for the July 2004 death of Marcela Hope Yellowbear, who was a member of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe.

The toddler's mother, Macalia Blackburn, pleaded guilty to being an accessory to murder. She testified against Yellowbear.

The trial took place in Thermopolis although the crime took place in Riverton, a border town near the Wind River Reservation. Potential anti-Indian bias and bias among members of the Eastern Shoshone Tribe prompted the judge to move the trial.
