First Nations to fall under Manitoba smoking ban

First Nations in Manitoba will be subject to the province's ban on smoking in public places

Minister Dave Chomiak said businesses on reserves must comply with the ban. All new and future video lottery terminal sites and liquor establishments will have to abide by the law immediately while existing VLT sites and bars will have a year.

The province initially still believes the ban, as written, doesn't apply to tribal land. But a judge struck down the exemption.

The province is appealing the ruling. Chomiak said it could have devastating impacts on First Nations economies and sovereignty.
