Dispute arises over county's road on trust land

The Caleveras Band of Mi-Wuk Indians is asserting control over a county road that has become the source of an escalating dispute.

The road apparently runs through land held in trust. The Caleveras Band, however, is not federally recognized.

Tribal members say they have been threatened and have had rocks thrown at their cars. The Calaveras County Sheriff warned of "significant violence" if the problem isn't addressed.

The county has tried to seek answers from the Bureau of Indian Affairs but hasn't gotten any response.
