Puyallup Tribe to develop shipping terminal at port

The Puyallup Tribe of Washington has signed a major deal to develop a shipping container terminal in the Port of Tacoma.

The tribe will use the 180-acre site for the project. SSA Marine, the largest U.S.-owned terminal operator, will design and construct the $300 million facility, the largest and most expensive in the port, The Tacoma News Tribune reported.

The tribe owns 128 acres at the port, which is already held in trust. SSA recently purchased 52 acres adjacent to the tribal portion, which the tribe will seek to have placed in trust.

The tribe received the port land as part of a land claims settlement.
