Indian center in Boston raises money at first gala

The North American Indian Center of Boston held its first gala on May 12 to raise money for a permanent home.

The center is located in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston. Due to increased development, the center faced pressure to move. A piece of land behind the behind that was used for ceremonies and events was recently auctioned for $1.54 million

But with the help of the state Legislature, the center won't be going anywhere. Officials signed a 99-year-lease to maintain a permanent presence in the neighborhood. They are now raising money to fund a new building that will cost between $25 million and $30 million.

"We want to go home. We don't want to be relocated anymore," executive director Joanne Dunn said tat the gala, The Boston Globe reported.
