Cortina Rancheria faces opposition over landfill

The Cortina Band of Wintun Indians faces renewed opposition to a proposed landfill on its rancheria.

Colusa County officials filed a lawsuit against the Interior Department to challenge the environmental review for the project. The county now says the tribe must seek permission from the Environmental Protection Agency.

A group called Colusa Citizens for Safe Water opposes the landfill. Its members are being urged to contact Congress to stop the project.

The tribe plans a 443-acre landfill in partnership with a Canadian company. More than 12 million tons of waste will be stored at the site.
