Leaders of four Maine tribes met with Gov. John Baldacci (D) on Thursday to discuss economic development, education and other issues.
The 2007 Annual Assembly of Governors and Chiefs brought the Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, and Maliseet tribes and state officials together. They hope to build a stronger relationship and work together on common goals.
"Obviously we can’t solve everything here today, but the issues are on the table," Penobscot Nation Chief Kirk Francis told The Bangor Daily News.
The state and the tribes have butted heads on sovereignty, gaming and other issues. The state and federal courts have limited the tribes' immunity and ability to act as governments.
