Cherokee Nation looking for more Firedancers

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is looking for more firefighters to join its Firedancers program.

The tribe was the first in Oklahoma with a tribal firefighting program. Now 11 tribes in the state have their own crews.

The Cherokee Firedancers have been dispatched to fires across the nation. They also worked the recovery effort after the 2003 space shuttle crash and provided support for Hurricane Katrina efforts in 2004.

“It’s a feeling of accomplishment,” Squad Boss Terry Thompson, a member of the United Keetoowah Band, told The Muskogee Phoenix. “You get out there and work with a bunch of guys that you’re confident in."
