A scholar at the University of California-Davis has spent the last five years mapping the traditional communities of the Nisenan people.
Sheri Tatsch, who is Cherokee, says Sacramento and the surrounding region were Nisenan territory.
One community even survived in Sacramento until the 1930s.
"This was occupied territory," Tatsch told The Sacramento Bee. "It was land owned by a particular people."
Some Nisenan, who are part of the Maidu Tribe, names survive through streets and other places.
