Tribal funds included in Tar Creek settlement

A $65 million settlement over Tar Creek Superfund site in Oklahoma includes money for tribal restoration efforts.

The deal with Asarco LLC provides $7.5 million to the state Department of Environmental Quality, $33 million for the Environmental Protection Agency and the Bureau of Indian Affairs and $24.2 million for a natural resource trustee council. The council would consist of tribal, state and federal officials to cover restoration costs.

Tar Creek is the largest Superfund site in the nation. Millions of tons of mine waste are located on lands owned by the Quapaw Tribe and individual tribal members.
