Lumbee officials defend trip to NIEA in Hawaii

Leaders of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina are defending their trip to the National Indian Education Association conference in Hawaii.
The tribe sent 10 council members and 5 other representatives to the conference, which was held last month. Critics said the trip was a waste of money but chairman Jimmy Goins, who didn't make it to Hawaii, said not enough Lumbees attended.
The public school district in Robeson County, where most students are Lumbee, sent 17 people to NIEA.
Those who went said it was a worthwhile experience.
