2010 Olympic mascots inspired by First Nations

The Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics unveiled three mascots and a sidekick that are based on First Nations culture and heritage.

Miga is a snowboarding sea bear that is part killer whale and part Kermode spirit bear. He is based on Pacific Northwest traditions of an orca that becomes a bear when it arrives on land.

Quatchi is a sasquatch who loves hockey and wants to become a goalie. Sumi is animal-guardian spirit with the hat of an orca, the wings of the Thunderbird and the legs of a black bear.

Their sidekick (not pictured) is Mukmuk, a rare Vancouver Island marmot, a type of ground squirrel. His name comes from the Squamish word for food — muckamuck.
