Floyd Red Crow Westerman passes away at 71

Floyd Red Crow Westerman died this morning in Los Angeles, his family said. He was 71.

Westerman was a member of the Sisseton-Wapheton Sioux Tribe of South Dakota. He was a musician and activist whose first album, "Custer Died for Your Sins," symbolized the burgeoning American Indian Movement of the 1960s and 1970s.

" My heart is full of sadness. He was the greatest cultural ambassador that Indian America ever had - a real national treasures," AIM co-founder Dennis Banks told Indian Country Today.

Westerman later went on to star in television and film, appearing in "Dances with Wolves," "Walker, Texas Ranger" and the "X-Files," among others [Wikipedia | IMDB]
