DOI report backs Tigua Tribe's land claim

A report commissioned by the Interior Department backs up the Tigua Tribe's claim to 36 square miles in Texas.

Two historians said the Tigua Tribe was promised the land by the King of Spain. When Texas became part of the U.S., the land rights were supposed to be recognized.

Instead, the state took the land and later asserted jurisdiction over the tribe. Congress restored the tribe's federal recognition but hasn't address the land issue, which could end up in court.

The tribe has a small reservation in El Paso and owns some properties in the city, along with a 70,000-acre ranch.
