CSKT chairman gives keynote for Montana GOP

James Steele Jr., the chairman of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, delivered the keynote at the Montana Republican Party's winter meeting on Saturday.

Steele said the GOP hasn't done enough to reach Indian voters. "I think the Democratic Party has reached out to Native Americans in a variety of ways ... that the Republican Party has not really done," he said, the Associated Press reported.

Steele, who said he has voted for Republicans and Democrats, said all politicians can learn from Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D), who has maintained relationships with all of the state's tribes. "He set the bar for political leaders in Montana," Steele said..
