Fred Dakota, a controversial former chairman of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community of Michigan, won a seat on the tribal council on Saturday.
Dakota and Charles Loonsfoot were in a runoff after they received the same number of votes in a December election. This time around, Dakota won by 30 votes.
“When I got beat, I said the people have spoken, and now when I won I’ll say once again, the people have spoken,” Dakota told The Houghton Daily Mining Gazette.
Dakota was chairman for 21 years. He was convicted of bribery and tax evasion.and sentenced to 30 months in federal prison.
