Alaska Native appointed to state game board

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) appointed an Alaska Native to the state Board of Game on Friday.

Craig Fleener, who is Athabascan, will replace Teresa Sager-Albaugh, a former president of the Alaska Outdoor Council. Sager-Albaugh declined the nomination after Alaska Natives complained about her organization's opposition to Native subsistence rights.

If Sager-Albaugh's appointment had been accepted, there wouldn't have been any Alaska Natives on the board. That would have been a first since the board was founded in 1976.
