Ellen Evak Paneok, the first Alaska Native woman pilot, died on March 2. She was 48.
Paneok was widely recognized as an aviation pioneer. She was featured in the "Women and Flight" exhibit at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., and her achievements appeared in a number of books and publications.
Paneok flew for taxi operations in rural Alaska and worked for the Federal Aviation Administration and the Alaska Aviation Safety Foundation. She logged 15,000 hours in the air.
