Maine tribes awarded wildlife grants from DOI

Two Maine tribes have been awarded Tribal Wildlife Grants from the Interior Department.

The Aroostook Band of Micmacs will use $49,000 for wildlife habitat and species diversity. The tribe will plant wild and cultivated apple trees and high-bush cranberries.

The Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians will use $114,000 to study the aquatic habitat of the Meduxnekeag watershed. The work will take place in two phases.

The grants were among $6.2 million awarded to 38 tribes in 19 states.
