Lummi Nation to improve dangerous pathway

The Lummi Nation will work with Whatcom County, Washington, to improve a narrow stretch of road where five people have died since 1999.

The tribe and the county plan to install a 10-foot-wide paved pathway along Haxton Way. The project will cost more than $2 million, with $160,800 from the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

Since 1999, four pedestrians and one bicyclist have died on the road, with the most recent fatality occurring in January. One person was disabled after being hit on the road.
