Former U.S. Congressman Joe Kennedy, the son of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, addressed the Navajo Nation Council on Wednesday.
Kennedy discussed a wide range of topics, particularly renewable energy. In 1979, he founded Citizens Energy, a non-profit that has partnered with the tribe on a wind energy project.
Kennedy also talked about his time in the House from 1987 to 1999. He said he witnessed the "cover-up" of mismanagement of the Indian trust fund and the gutting of Indian housing funds.
“I’m telling you, you think there isn’t prejudice in this country against Native Americans, you go to the Congress of the United States and you wonder why the only way you have to make money is through gambling," Kennedy said, The Gallup Independent reported.
“The reason why Native Americans have gambling today is because the Congress of the United States didn’t have the guts to stand up and write the check that was necessary to provide for the housing," he added.
