Cason put in charge of safety at Interior Department

Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne has put associate deputy secretary Jim Cason in charge of safety after an internal audit turned up hazards at Interior Department facilities, including Bureau of Indian Affairs schools.

Inspector General Earl Devaney complained that safety wasn't a top priority. He found 13 BIA schools in which students and staff were at risk and reported that more than a quarter of BIA employees felt unsafe in the workplace

An Interior spokesperson said the BIA has begun to make a list of repairs at the 184 schools in the BIA system.
