Town to recognize Shinnecock Nation's status
The Shinnecock Nation of New York will officially display its tribal seal in the town of Southampton, New York.

The tribe is recognized by the state and has its own reservation. But relations with the town haven't always been positive.

Town Supervisor Linda Kabot hopes to change that. The tribe's seal will be placed at the town hall, where the seals of other town villages are placed.

The tribe is at the top of the waiting list for federal recognition. A pending lawsuit seeks to force the Bureau of Indian Affairs to make a decision.
