Wednesday, July 23, 2008

A new report from the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium looks at cancer rates among Alaska Natives.

Native women saw an unexplained rise in breast cancer rates between 1969 and 1998. The new data shows the cases might be leveling off.

Breast cancer is more prevalent among Native women in Anchorage and the Interior, according to the report. Colorectal cancer is most common among Native women in Barrow and coastal areas of western Alaska, the consortium said.

Among Native men, lung cancer is more the most prevalent form. It occurs at a rate 31 percent higher than for whites nationwide, the report said.
