Seminole Nation to vote on government reform

The
Seminole Nation of Oklahoma will hold a special election on September 20.
Voters are being asked to amend the constitution to create a tribal court. Another amendment would remove future federal approval of future constitutional changes.
In 2000, the tribe voted to change its constitution in a way that disenfranchised the Freedmen, who are the descendants of former slaves. The
Bureau of Indian Affairs rejected the changes and withheld federal funds until the citizenship issue was resolved.
