Alaska Native leaders are on the witness list for the trial of Sen. Ted Stevens (R-Alaska), the powerful Republican who is accused of failing to report gifts from an oil company.

Cook Inlet Region Inc. chairman Margie Brown, former Cook Inlet Region Inc. president Carl Marrs and former Arctic Slope Regional Corp. chairman Oliver Leavitt were identified as potential witnesses as jury selection began in Washington, D.C., on Monday. Others include former secretary of state Colin Powell, Democratic Sens. Edward M. Kennedy (Massaschusetts), Patrick J. Leahy (Vermont.) and Daniel K. Inouye (Hawaii); and Republican Sen. Orrin G. Hatch (Utah).

Stevens, the former chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee , is one of the most powerful members of the Senate. He has used his position to help Alaska Native corporations and to pressure Alaska tribes and villages.
