The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is questioning a drilling project in Utah after the Hopi Tribe of Arizona raised concerns about the impact on cultural sites.

The tribe wanted to be consulted about the drilling of more than 800 natural-gas wells in Nine Mile Canyon. But the Bureau of Land Management wouldn't allow the tribe to participate in the review process.

The tribe turned to the ACHP, which sent a letter to the BLM that questioned whether the agency considered the impact on ancient art and archaeological sites. More than 1,000 rock art have been documented in the canyon.

Bill Barrett Corporation has already drilled about 100 wells in the area.
